About This Release
Music Lesson No H1 follows in the lineage of its musical essay predecessors, funeral of a nation & interrupt the programming. Equal parts audio & visual, Music Lesson No H1 is an aesthetic journey in the Quranic word.
Music Lesson No H1 is the result of a spiritual walk that first traversed Christianity before journeying into Islam. While the written word was previously unfamiliar, the concepts of the Quran struck a familiar cord in thankugoodsir revealing themselves melodically. The music that followed took its cues from rhythms associated with the church; however, the hymns substituted Biblical scripture for Quranic verse.
The visual component of Music Lesson No H1 is intended to accompany the essay in a way that explores religion as it relates to Black culture in America. The images navigate past, present, & future in an effort to contextualize these unique & highly specific spaces. This is an anthropological study in a culture that has defined Blackness within the confines of the American landscape.
